Craps has long been one of the most glamorous of all the games of chance. There is just something so exhilarating about watching a gambler risk it all on one throw of the dice. The romantic aura surrounding craps can be attributed in no small way to the classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, which featured those roguish craps players Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit not only prevailing against the odds, but also winning the hearts of their true loves.
In craps, one player (called the “shooter”) rolls two dice while the other players bet on the dice rolls. The right to become the shooter moves clockwise around the craps table. A player can refuse to shoot but can still bet on the dice rolls. Before throwing the dice, the shooter must first bet the house minimum on the pass or don’t pass line.
Play goes like this: first, the shooter makes a “come-out roll” to establish a point. If he rolls a 2, 3 or 12, the roll is called “craps” and players lose their pass line bets; if the roll is a 7 or 11, it is a “natural” and pass line bettors win their bets. Either way, if these numbers are rolled, the shooter must roll again until a point is established (meaning a roll of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10). Once a point is established, the dealer moves an on button to the point number to identify it. The shooter then continues throwing the dice until he rolls the point number or a seven. If he rolls the point number, the pass line wins; if he rolls a seven, the pass line loses and the dice is moved to the next player who wants to be the shooter. Online casino.
There are two types of bets that can be made – line bets and single roll bets.
Line bets are won through points. As mentioned earlier, the pass line wins if the come-out roll is a 7 or 11 and loses if it is 2, 3 or 12 (this is called “crapping out”). However, once a point is established, a seven roll is a losing roll and rolling the established point means a win. Players can also bet on the non-pass line, which is the opposite of a pass line bet (i.e. a seven is a losing roll during the come out round and a winning roll once the point is established). For non-pass line bettors, a 12 (or a 2 in some casinos) is a draw, meaning the player cannot lose.
Single-roll or proposition bets are resolved in one throw of the dice by the shooter. There are many different types of single-roll bets including snake eyes (2 wins), boxcars or cornrows (12 wins), three way (2, 3 or 12 wins) and the field bet in which the bettor wagers that 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 will come out on the next dice roll.
